Intended for pre-schoolers, yet fascinating and moving for audiences of all ages, this production is presented in Seña y Verbo’s unique style: a bilingual performance (Spanish and Mexican Sign Language, originally, but may be presented in English and ASL) with live music, to which we now, in “UGA”, add puppetry and “Theatre of Objects”—techniques that are new to our company.
This new Seña y Verbo production was developed in a double theatre lab: on the one hand, the exploration of the possibilities that arise when Deaf Theatre meets the Theatre of Objects. On the other hand, the company explored the world of pre-schoolers, visiting kinder-gardens, playing and talking to children from three to five years of age. Thanks to this, the actions and events that play a part of “UGA” respond to what really interests pre-school children: the evening bath, animal friends, physical games, birthday cake and blowing candles, etc. Thanks to the talent of a wonderful creative team, this interesting process resulted in a play that is so rich at a sensory level and so charming and funny, that it has truly captivated hearing as well as Deaf audiences of all ages.
